CHURCH OF THE MASTER

SHEPHERDING MINISTRY

A shepherding ministry was established by the Diaconate in 1985 with the purpose of nurturing church members by the sharing of faith, while being sensitive and responsive to the needs of others.  Many scriptures such as Galatians 5:6,13, “Faith working through love … be servants of one another” provide guidance and inspiration for the shepherding ministry.

In its 23rd year, shepherding remains a vital ministry at Church of the Master.  At the present time, there are 19 shepherds serving the congregation, active and inactive, young and old.  The shepherding coordinator, working with the shepherding committee, is responsible for planning and evaluating.  The shepherds are the heart which keeps shepherding functioning.

There is a shepherd’s guide that provides suggestions and guidance for carrying out the responsibilities of a shepherd tending his flock.  Through cards, notes, phone calls, visits and in-church contacts, shepherds work to establish caring relationships.

Throughout the year, there are various special opportunities for fellowship and growth, such as a Shepherding Dinner, Shepherding Sunday when the shepherds and the congregation renew their commitment, and training and support workshops.  The shepherding network serves as a prayer/information chain.  Another important function is to keep the pastor informed of special needs.

The Good Shepherd Window at the front of the sanctuary is a constant inspiration and reminder that “We are His people and the sheep of His pasture,” and that our Gentle Shepherd is our guide who will lead us and help us find our way.  As we are led by the Spirit, shepherding will continue to make a difference in the life of all of us at Church of the Master.
